Game Fact
The first modern chess tournament was held in London in 1851, and won by a little-known German player, Adolf Anderssen. That same year, Anderssen played a game against rival Lionel Kieseritzky that will forever be remembered as the Immortal Game. The sheer boldness of Anderssen's game play has been called a spectacle "perhaps unparalleled in chess literature".

Word of the day romance

What else would you expect today? Hard to believe that the use of romance meaning a love affair only dates back to 1916 and it was nearly 30 years later that it meant courting a lover. Who said romance is dead? It's only just arrived. Of course the word when applied to a love story goes back to the 1600s, but it started life 300 years before as a story of a hero's adventures of chivalry.
